Pictured… (Unknown Artist, vol.3) uses rotoscoped and montaged found footage of 128 different fictional female visual artist characters culled from 112 moving image sources spanning nine decades to tell a personal, collective, and cultural story of being a female artist. The eleven-minute video installation with sound comprises sixteen vignettes, each with its own theme, similar to scenes in a play, chapters in a book, or movements in a symphony. The artist characters in Pictured… vary in age, style, and race, and many recur across the narrative arc. Liberated from their original context, the characters play new roles in a series of slowly evolving tableaux that unfold atop a black background graded with white horizontal lines. All of the dialogue in Pictured… is original to each clip, extracted, and then inserted into a tightly edited script. Through a dynamic combination of montage and collage, the work simultaneously critiques media portrayals of female artists and tells my own story through the characters’ original words, mannerisms, and behaviors. In this way, Pictured… is both a personal essay about my experience as a working artist and an experimental documentary about female artists navigating their careers built from decontextualized and reassembled found footage.
*This is the third work in my larger series Unknown Artist
